"All member states agreed to open the first accession negotiations cluster with Ukraine and Moldova," European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a joint social media post on Friday. Costa and von der Leyen said enlargement is a strategic choice in a world marked by growing uncertainty.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said after the EU announcement that Ukraine is doing what is necessary, and it is important that the EU is also keeping its word. He added that the opening of the first cluster is significant political and moral support for Ukraine and its people.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu said she welcomes the decision to open the first cluster of accession negotiations on Monday, adding that Moldova will keep delivering reforms.
