Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government approved tough security reforms this week following the violence, which bore similarities to protests in France. After riots and looting in Milan last weekend, the government passed a decree easing detention rules for minors and imposing fines on parents if their children cause damage during protests.
In France, police have arrested 135 protestors and seized a variety of weapons, including metal balls, lead pellets, fireworks, slingshots, steel balls, and improvised weapons. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said there have been no major incidents so far. Police fired tear gas on Saturday to disperse a crowd of around 150 protesters in Lyon, southeastern France. Authorities had previously banned demonstrations in the city.
