The blast took place in a building believed to have been storing a large quantity of explosives used for coal mining operations in Kaungtup village, Namkhan township.
By Sunday evening, rescue teams had recovered 46 bodies, and 74 injured victims were transported to hospitals for treatment. Myanmar media report that the death toll could reach 55. Authorities are continuing search and rescue efforts at the scene.
