Among the events affected was the Great American State Fair on the National Mall in Washington, a centerpiece of President Donald Trump's initiative to commemorate the nation's 250th anniversary. The fair, which was designed to showcase all 50 states, was temporarily closed on Friday afternoon as temperatures soared to 38 degrees Celsius.
According to the National Weather Service, much of the eastern United States is experiencing unusually high temperatures. Peak heat indexes in some areas could climb to as high as 46 degrees Celsius, with numerous daily, monthly, and even all-time temperature records under threat.
Meanwhile, Spain is one of the countries hardest hit by the ongoing European heatwave. Spain's State Meteorological Agency has issued orange alerts for nine regions, with temperatures forecast to reach up to 42 degrees Celsius in parts of Andalusia, Extremadura, and the Tagus Valley. The heatwave, which began earlier this week, is expected to persist until at least July 7.
