Iran will secure the Persian Gulf region and end the hostile misuse of this waterway, Mojtaba Khamenei said in a message on Thursday marking National Persian Gulf Day.
“The new legal framework and management system for the Strait of Hormuz will advance comfort and development for all the region’s nations, and its economic benefits will bring joy to the nation,” the supreme leader said, adding that the future of the Persian Gulf region would be "one without the United States.”
Mojtaba Khamenei said that Iranians viewed technological capacities including nuclear and missile technologies "as national assets and will safeguard them just as they defend their land, sea and air borders."
The same day, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said any attempt to impose a maritime blockade or restrictions is contrary to international law... and is doomed to fail." He said in a statement that the measures would "not only fail to enhance regional security, but are in fact a source of tension and a disruption to lasting stability in the Persian Gulf."
The statements by the Iranian leaders came after President Donald Trump said at the White House that the United States was prepared to maintain its blockade and pressure on Iran until it secured commitments regarding the country’s nuclear program.
