The statement, issued on Sunday, came less than a day after Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi told diplomats in Tehran that “the ball is in the United States' court”.

He said Washington must choose between a diplomatic solution and continuing a hardline confrontational approach, adding that Iran is prepared for both scenarios.
