The US State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said on Friday that the April 16 cessation of hostilities will be extended by 45 days to enable further progress. The US State Department will host the next round of negotiations on June 2 and 3 in an effort to secure a long-term political agreement. In addition, the Pentagon is scheduled to meet with military delegations from both countries on May 29.

Pigott said on social media that Washington hopes these discussions will advance lasting peace between the two countries and full recognition of each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while establishing genuine security along their shared border.

The ceasefire agreement, which had already been extended, is set to expire on Sunday.
