On X, Burnham, 56, called for an "orderly and responsible" transition after Starmer announced he was stepping down.

Manchester’s Mayor Burnham said political change should never distract from the responsibility to improve people’s lives. He said he wants to make sure this transition is a positive process of renewal for the Labour Party and for Britain.

Following his resignation, Starmer asked the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party to set out a timetable with nominations opening on July 9 and completed by the summer recess. That will ensure that a new leader is in place before Parliament returns in September, he said.
