The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said movement along the Cotabato Trench "uplifted portions of the coastline in the provinces of Saranganiand Davao Occidental, exposing the seafloor."
Local residents reported the geological phenomenon, known as coastal uplift, two days after last Monday’s earthquake. The uplift has expanded the shoreline by as much as 200 meters in some areas. Authorities have yet to determine the full extent of the effect.
A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Mindanao Island in southern Philippines last Monday. The quake and subsequent aftershocks killed at least 61 people, and left at least 40 others missing.
According to the Philippines' National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, as of Sunday the earthquake had disrupted more than 173,000 households, about 724,000 people.
