To achieve Class I urban status on a province-wide scale, a pioneering development model in Vietnam, Quang Ninh has demonstrated impressive results through its long-term development strategy. Economically, the province has maintained double-digit GRDP growth for more than a decade. By 2025, its per capita GRDP surpassed 10,000 USD, more than twice the national average.
Quang Ninh's urbanization rate has exceeded 70 percent, placing it among the highest in the country. Its urban network includes four cities, Ha Long, Cam Pha, Uong Bi, and Mong Cai, and two towns, Quang Yen and Dong Trieu, all of which serve as strong regional growth hubs.
The province's achievements are also reflected in its modern, integrated, and innovative infrastructure. Quang Ninh is the only province in Vietnam with a comprehensive transportation network that includes Van Don International Airport, a nearly 180-kilometer expressway connecting Hai Phong with the Mong Cai International Border Gate, and major international seaports such as Hon Gai and Con Ong–Hon Net.
The recognition of Quang Ninh as meeting the criteria for a Class I urban area marks an important milestone, providing a solid foundation for the province to continue developing into a modern, green, smart, and sustainable urban center. It is also considered a significant step in Vietnam's national urban development strategy, helping strengthen regional connectivity within the Red River Delta and reinforcing Quang Ninh's role as a key growth engine in northern Vietnam.
