According to the An Giang Provincial Party Committee, rescue teams had rescued and recovered 36 people by 3:30 p.m. the same day. The accident claimed the lives of 15 Indian nationals, including 13 men and two women.
Working groups have been deployed to assist the victims and their families.
Provincial police are investigating the cause of the accident and handling the case in accordance with the law.
The canoe, operated by Ocean Pearl Island Company, was carrying 32 Indian tourists, one Vietnamese tour guide, and three crew members when it capsized at around 1 p.m. while travelling from May Rut Ngoai Island to An Thoi Port amid strong winds and rough seas.
Earlier, immediately after receiving reports of the accident, the Prime Minister issued an urgent directive on response and recovery efforts.
He extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and expressed his sincere sympathy to those injured in the accident.
The Prime Minister instructed the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Construction, the authorities of An Giang Province, and other relevant agencies to mobilize all available resources to address the aftermath of the accident and provide support to the victims and their families.
