At a press conference, Mario Fehr, the Zurich region’s top security official, described the attack as “an evil act of terror”.
Regional police commander Marius Weyermann told reporters that it was "clear from the scene that the motive for this act must be sought in the realm of radicalization and extremism”.
The incident occurred at around 8:30 a.m local time. One person sustained serious injuries, while the other two suffered moderate injuries, according to police. All the victims are Swiss citizens.
The 31-year-old suspect, who was arrested shortly after emergency services were alerted, was born in Switzerland in 1994 and became a Swiss citizen in 2009. He was reported to have shouted "Allahu akbar!" while running along the front of the station.
