The initiative is part of efforts to implement the Politburo’s Resolution 72 on breakthrough measures to improve public healthcare. Thai Nguyen is the first locality in Vietnam to roll out the scheme.
The scheme is designed to benefit approximately 1.14 million residents across 78 communes and wards, including disadvantaged areas and former revolutionary bases. As part of the initiative, the province has selected eight communes in Regions I and II to provide health insurance coverage for more than 6,000 uninsured residents.
The scheme will also help cover parts of patients’ payments for medical examinations and treatment at 11 hospitals and 43 commune- and ward-level health stations.
Around 1.3 million people are expected to benefit, while the province’s health insurance coverage rate is projected to reach 98%, surpassing the Government’s target of 96% for 2026.
Nguyen The Manh, Chairman of the Thai Nguyen Provincial People’s Committee, said: "By the end of 2026, Thai Nguyen will conduct an initial review of the scheme and submit recommendations to the Ministry of Health and relevant central agencies on expanding it across the province and potentially nationwide."
"The Provincial People's Committee urges for greater efforts so that residents can soon benefit from the scheme. Our guiding principle is to put people at the heart of all policies, ensuring they are both the focus of public services and the beneficiaries of socio-economic development and social welfare," Mr. Manh added.
The scheme will take effect on November 1, with a total budget of nearly 1 million USD.
