Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, India, Rubio said Russia was invited to participate in G20 activities pursuant to President Trump's decision and will be represented at the group's future meetings.

Rubio noted that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov might attend the foreign ministers' meeting in Atlanta this month, and that President Putin will likely travel to Miami for the G20 Summit later this year.

The revelation follows reports that the American, Chinese, and Russian heads of state may hold a trilateral meeting in Shenzhen, China, on the sidelines of next month’s APEC leaders’ meeting. There has been no official confirmation of the meeting or its specific agenda.

President Trump welcomed the release on Wednesday of an American citizen who had been imprisoned in Russia for 7 years on charges of participating in mercenary activities. The release took place during a visit to Russia by a US Special Envoy to promote new talks on Ukraine.
