Speaking on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, Burnham said, “In my lifetime I would like to see that happen, but I am not going to move ahead of the public, I am not going to dictate”.
He reaffirmed his commitment to the Labour Party’s election manifesto, which rules out rejoining the EU single market and customs union during the current parliamentary term.
Prime Minister Burnham said Brexit has done more harm than good, arguing that leaving the European Union has damaged the UK economy through a decade of low growth and weakened border and immigration controls.
The remarks came ahead of the second UK-EU summit, scheduled to take place in Brussels on November 20.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Burnham will meet European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to advance agreements aimed at cutting costs and simplifying procedures for farmers and businesses. The two sides are also expected to strengthen cooperation on security, tackling illegal migration, and combating crime.
