Although a list of sanctioned entities has yet to be specified, the order indicates a focus on defense, mining, finance, and security.
During an event in Florida last week just hours after announcing the sanctions, President Trump hinted at the possibility of military intervention in Cuba. He mentioned a potential deployment of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln closer to Cuban waters following its mission in the Middle East.
In response, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel on Saturday condemned the military threats as “dangerous and unprecedented,” and urged the international community to pay close attention and join the American people in preventing such actions. He reaffirmed Cuba’s determination to defend its independence and sovereignty.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla said political reform is not a matter for negotiation with the US.
