China's move was a response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan (China) on Wednesday, despite China's strong objections.
Five ballistic missiles fired by the Chinese military fell into Japan's exclusive economic zone on Thursday, the Japanese government said.
Japanese Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi called it "a grave issue that concerns Japan’s national security and the safety of its people".
