Speaking at a working session with the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Policies and Strategies on development orientations of Vietnam’s materials industry in Hanoi on Thursday, the Vietnamese top leader stressed the need to enhance a selective development, focusing on maintaining and upgrading core materials; achieving breakthroughs in strategic materials; and preparing early for future materials.
He called for a strong shift from raw resource extraction to deep processing, technological mastery, and increasing domestic value-added content.
Mr. Lam underscored that science and technology, standards, high-quality human resources, and Vietnamese enterprises must serve as the pillars of development.
He emphasized that the materials industry should develop in a green, sustainable, and self-reliant direction, with international competitiveness that aligns with global commitments while safeguarding national interests to the greatest extent possible.
The General Secretary and State President assigned the Government Party Committee to lead research and formulate a Strategy for the Development of Vietnam’s Materials Industry to 2030, with a vision to 2045, for issuance at the earliest opportunity.
The strategy, he noted, must closely align with the Party’s major policies on industrialization, modernization, science and technology, innovation, digital transformation, green transition, private sector development, energy security, national defense and security, and international integration.
The Vietnamese top leader said Vietnam should prioritize five key groups of materials: rare earth materials, semiconductor materials, materials for batteries and energy storage, advanced new materials, and next-generation construction materials. These sectors, he said, hold foundational importance for industrialization, modernization, and economic self-reliance.
