Speaking at the opening session of the 36th Meeting of States Parties to UNCLOS in New York on Monday, Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Minh Vu urged member states to fully and effectively implement UNCLOS, support the institutions established under the Convention, and promote dialogue and cooperation to address emerging maritime challenges.
During discussions on the report of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), Mr. Vu praised the tribunal’s role in the peaceful settlement of disputes and its contribution to interpreting and clarifying UNCLOS provisions. He also expressed support for capacity-building programs aimed at developing countries.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations in New York, hosted a diplomatic reception to introduce Vietnam’s first-ever candidate for an ITLOS judgeship for the 2026–2035 term. The nominee is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Lan Anh, Vice President of the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam.
