Since May 2014, Vietnam has sent 1,400 personnel to UN missions in South Sudan, the Central African Republic, the Abyei region, and a European Union training mission in the Central African Republic, as well as to UN headquarters and its liaison office in Belgium, said Director of the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations Major General Pham Manh Thang at an inter-agency task force meeting in Hanoi on Wednesday. Mr. Thang said Vietnamese forces have maintained a clean safety record and won praise from the UN and the international community.
In April 2026, Vietnam registered 7 new unit categories on the UN Peacekeeping Capability Readiness System (PCRS), all of them at Level 1 readiness. The new units are: Mechanized Infantry/Base Protection Units, Level-2 Field Hospitals, Engineering Units, Military Control/Military Police Units, Communications Units, Transport Helicopter Units, and Airport Support Units.
The Ministry of National Defense is prioritizing preparations for 3 unit categories – Level-2 Field Hospitals, Engineering Units, and Mechanized Infantry/Base Protection Units – to undergo PCRS inspection and upgrade procedures. These units are being readied for UN peacekeeping missions and other deployments.
For the Ministry of Public Security, preparations are currently underway for Vietnam’s No. 1 Peacekeeping Police Unit, which has been certified by the United Nations at Level 3 and is ready for deployment.
Vietnam’s registration of new units from both the Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Public Security on the PCRS demonstrates the UN’s high regard for the contributions of Vietnamese forces to UN peacekeeping operations.
