She made the remarks in response to a reporter’s question regarding the 10th anniversary of the ruling issued by the Arbitral Tribunal constituted under Annex VII of UNCLOS in the case between the Philippines and China.

“Vietnam’s clear and consistent position is that maritime disputes must be resolved through peaceful means, with full respect for diplomatic and legal processes, without the use or threat of force, and in accordance with international law, particularly the 1982 UNCLOS,” Ms. Hang said.

She noted that Vietnam has consistently supported the settlement of disputes concerning the interpretation and application of the Convention in accordance with its provisions.

The spokesperson reiterated that UNCLOS is the sole legal basis that comprehensively and fully provides a framework governing the scope of maritime entitlement.

“As a coastal state in the East Sea and an active member of UNCLOS, Vietnam has always demonstrated its goodwill in implementing the Convention and calls on all parties to fully comply with their obligations under it, including in defining maritime claims and exercising maritime rights, respecting the rights of other states, and cooperating to maintain peace, stability, security, safety, freedom of navigation and overflight, and good order in the East Sea in accordance with international law,” she said.
