Addressing the debate, themed “Strengthening Women’s Participation to Prevent and Resolve Conflict,” Permanent Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Minh Vu stressed that the Women, Peace and Security agenda has long been a priority for Vietnam.
He highlighted Vietnam’s contributions, from promoting UN Security Council Resolution 1889 on women’s role in post-conflict settings in 2009 to adopting its first National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security in 2024, alongside policies aimed at increasing women’s participation in political, economic and social life.
Mr. Vu emphasized that women should be viewed not only as victims of conflict but also as peacebuilders and architects of a more sustainable and inclusive future.
He called on the international community to ensure women’s full, equal and meaningful participation in peace negotiations and decision-making processes; increase investment in healthcare, education and women’s economic empowerment in post-conflict situations; support women-led peacebuilding, reconciliation and community initiatives; and expand opportunities for women in emerging fields such as digital transformation, STEM education and climate adaptation.
On the same day, speaking at the Humanitarian Affairs Segment of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the Vietnamese diplomat stressed that humanitarian action must be carried out in accordance with the UN Charter and international humanitarian law, while respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity, protecting civilians and ensuring safe humanitarian access.
He reaffirmed Vietnam’s readiness to contribute to the international community’s humanitarian efforts.
