Viet said it is an honor and responsibility for Vietnam and other countries to work together to better ensure human rights in the world and promote international dialogue and cooperation in line with the United Nations Charter and international law.

He affirmed that the current complicated world situation, especially the competition among major countries, conflicts and contradictions between countries, are a challenge to Vietnam as a UNHRC member.

“During this tenure, the intrnational community, the Party, the State, and the people will have high expectations of Vietnam. Vietnam must perform its duties as an active member. On the other hand, it needs to propose initiatives and new ideas in its leading role,” the diplomat said.

Viet asked ministries, departments, and agencies to strengthen coordination and information sharing, promote initiatives and proposals that will leave Vietnam’s mark and enhance research, forecasting, and communications to ensure that Vietnam shines in its role as a UNHRC member for this tenure.

Vietnam was elected as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2023-2025 term along with 14 other countries at a meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on October 11, 2022.

As the only ASEAN candidate for this term, Vietnam’s candidacy message of "Respect and Understanding; Dialogue and Cooperation; All human rights for all people" was well received.
