Chairing the national conference on child protection in Hanoi, Deputy Prime Minister Tra, who is also Chairwoman of the National Committee for Children, said the protection, care and education of children is a major policy that receives special attention from the Party and State. To date, the policy and institutional system related to child protection and care is basically complete, she said, adding Vietnam has made great strides in protecting children's rights and creating the best environment and conditions for children to develop.

The Deputy Prime Minister requested continued improvement of institutions and policies, including studying amendments and supplements to the Law on Children to meet new requirements. She urged a strong shift from passiveness to proactive prevention and a "shield" to protect children in family, school, and community, minimizing the risks of abuse and injuries to children.

Deputy Prime Minister Tra requested more solutions to protect and support children in the online environment, renew communication work, educate parenting skills and self-protection skills for children in all situations.

She emphasized the need to give all the best to children to develop comprehensively, have enough equipment to step firmly into the future, and contribute to building a rich, strong, prosperous and happy country.

Vietnam currently has about 25 million children, accounting for one fourth of the country's population. The care, education and protection of children is directed by the Party and State through many major policies.

Children's basic rights have recently been guaranteed at a very high level. Nearly 100% of children under 5 years old have had their births registered; 97% of children under 1 year old are fully vaccinated; 100% of children under 6 years old are given free health insurance cards.

The primary school attendance rate reached 99.7%. The State has exempted tuition for students from preschool to high school, and constructed 248 multi-level boarding schools for ethnic minorities in border areas.
