Hanoi has invested 42 million USD in Yen Nghia Regulatory Lake Projects 1 and 2 in An Khanh commune. The projects are designed to regulate rainwater, ease pressure on the urban drainage system, strengthen flood prevention capacity, and reduce overload on the Nhue River basin and western Hanoi’s drainage network.
Yen Nghia Regulatory Lake Project 1 spans 20 hectares, with a total investment of 32.5 million USD, while Project 2 covers 5 hectares, with an investment of 9.5 million USD. Construction of all components is underway simultaneously.
“As this is an emergency project for Hanoi, we have concentrated maximum manpower and equipment to ensure it stays on schedule,” said Trinh Van Ta, Deputy Director of the Infrastructure Development Investment Company.
Construction of the Me Tri Reservoir, also known as Dong Bong 2 Lake, began in late January. More than 90% of the excavation and embankment work for the reservoir, with a capacity of 600,000 cubic meters, has been completed.
Hundreds of engineers, laborers, and technical staff have remained on-site through the holidays to maintain progress and ensure construction quality.
Trinh Tuan Anh, a team leader at the Dong Bong 2 Lake site, said workers fully understand the urgency of the project.
“We’re pouring concrete and working on steel reinforcement. Over the past few days, we’ve been operating 3 shifts and 4 teams to ensure the progress and quality of this vital project,” said Tuan Anh.
Meanwhile, the Thuy Phuong Canal Upgrading Project is being implemented with the motto “no days off for progress”. The project will improve drainage capacity in northwestern Hanoi while replenishing water for the To Lich river. About 70% of the work has been completed.
Across Hanoi, flood-control, canal upgrading, and drainage improvement projects are being pushed forward at full speed, including work at 50 drainage culvert and pipeline locations.
“All these construction sites are rushing day and night to finish before this year's rainy season, aiming to significantly mitigate urban flooding in 2026,” said Nguyen Duc Hung, Director of the Technical Infrastructure Management Center of the municipal Department of Construction.
The rapid rollout of emergency flood-control projects reflects Hanoi’s strong determination to tackle chronic urban flooding and address pressing public concerns through decisive infrastructure upgrades.
