(VOVWORLD) - US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo met Chinese Ambassador Xie Feng on Tuesday and had a “productive discussion” ahead of her trip to China, the US Commerce Department said in a statement on Tuesday.
Raimondo is due to visit Beijing and Shanghai in China from Sunday to Wednesday next week. She looks forward to constructive discussions on issues relating to the US-China trade ties, challenges faced by US businesses, and areas for potential cooperation, the Department said.
The visit will strengthen prior agreements on maintaining high-level contacts across a range of issues discussed at last year’s meeting between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Raimondo’s trip follows a series of high-ranking visits to China by US officials in recent months, in an attempt to ease tensions between the world’s two largest economies, including a visit in June by Secretary of State Antony Blinken and another in July by Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen.
