At the conference, Bui Minh Thanh, Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, stressed the need to strengthen communications, targeting the group of ship owners and captains, handle violations effectively and optimize resources.
“Being assigned by the Politburo to advise on making a special urban law for Ho Chi Minh City, we must consider the IUU issue very carefully. There needs to be a mechanism to examine whether or not on-the-spot fines are possible, along with regulations and sanctions to prevent violations from recurring,” said Thanh.
As of June 5, Ho Chi Minh City had 4,445 fishing boats. All registered fishing vessels have been updated in the national database. So far this year, the city has not recorded any cases of fishing vessels being arrested by foreign countries. Communications have been promoted as local authorities have listened to the thoughts and wishes of fishermen.
