World Cup opener: Mexico defeats South Africa amid 3 red cards

[VOVWORLD] - Mexico, one of the three co-hosts of the 2026 World Cup, kicked off the tournament with a 2-0 victory over South Africa at the legendary Azteca Stadium in a Group A match following the opening ceremony on Thursday.

Mexico's goals were scored by Julian Quinones and Jimenez.

The match was marred by three red cards -- two for South Africa and one for Mexico -- the most in an opening World Cup contest.

Following this match on Thursday, the second World Cup match will take place at the Estadio Guadalajara in Zapopan (Mexico), between South Korea and the Czech Republic.
