The Artemis Accords were launched in 2020 by the United States and seven other countries to establish common principles guiding international cooperation in the exploration and use of the Moon, Mars, and other celestial bodies. These principles promote transparency, interoperability between systems, the sharing of scientific information, assistance to astronauts, and the responsible and sustainable use of outer space, and provide a framework for countries to work together for safe, peaceful, sustainable space exploration.

Minister of Science and Technology Vu Hai Quan said Vietnam identifies space science and technology as a key sector, one that contributes to enhancing national scientific and technological capabilities and supports sustainable development. Vietnam hopes to work with other signatories to promote the peaceful, safe, equitable, transparent, and sustainable exploration and use of outer space in accordance with international law, generating practical benefits for humanity and the Earth.

Vietnam prioritizes the development of independent capabilities in space technology and data, and promoting their application in resource management, environmental protection, climate change response, and disaster prevention. Vietnam aims to develop a space economy ecosystem and strengthen its capacity to govern space activities.

“Resolution 57, issued by the Politburo on December 22, 2024, on breakthroughs in science and technology development, innovation, and national digital transformation, sets out numerous goals and requirements. We’re focusing on 10 groups of strategic technologies, with the ambition of mastering these technologies and strengthening Vietnam’s capabilities and self-reliance. At the same time, we’re pursuing applied research to rapidly translate scientific and technological advances into changes in production and business models, boosting productivity and economic quality, and contributing to Vietnam’s GDP growth,” Minister Quan said.

Welcoming Vietnam as the 78th signatory to the Artemis Accords, the US Department of State said the move expands the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership into a new area of cooperation – space exploration – and adds a new dimension to three decades of bilateral ties. The State Department said space exploration is opening up new opportunities and playing an increasingly important role in science, economic growth, and the development of future technologies.
