Dishes are woven into films and music videos as visual elements. Vietnamese cuisine has appeared in films such as “The Scent of Green Papaya”, “Vertical Ray of the Sun”, and “Coriander Scent”.

More recently, the film “The Scent of Pho” has continued the exploration of the cultural depths behind familiar dishes. In that film, pho is tied to family memories, generational craftsmanship, and the pride of those who preserve the essence of Vietnamese culinary heritage.

The music video Bac Bling by Hoa Minzy is a striking example of this trend. The video incorporates cultural symbols from Vietnam’s Kinh Bac region, including Quan ho folk singing, traditional craft villages, betel and areca customs, and rustic local dishes.

In one memorable scene, singer/songwriter Tuan Cry eats a traditional local cake, sparking viewers’ curiosity about the delicacy. As a result, the centuries-old Tra Lam tofu has gained much wider recognition.

Building on that success, Tuan Cry recently collaborated on the music video Bà Tuyết Hơi Non, which is literally translated as “Ms. Tuyet is still a beginner,” for which he wrote and produced the entire soundtrack. The video tells the story of a resilient rural woman navigating the digital age.

Cuisine becomes an inspiration and a symbol of perseverance, Tuan Cry said. “Cuisine in our new video is described in simple, accessible words and sensory descriptions that stimulate the audience’s taste buds, with words such as ‘spicy’ and ‘crispy.’ Familiar everyday street snacks appear in the music video, not just for enjoyment, but representing the culture and identity of Vietnam,” said Tuan Cry.

The TV series Chàng Dâng Cá Nàng Ăn Hoa (He serves fish, she eats flowers), the film Kung Fu Phở, and many contemporary music videos exemplify the trend of young artists using their culture as creative material.

Fusing art and cuisine is becoming a hot trend among young artists. And social media is definitely accelerating it.
