Na Si Market is famous for products that not everyone dares to try: insects. To gather them, local Thai ethnic people go into the forests and fields early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the insects are most active. Collecting insects requires experience, patience, and an understanding of the habits of each species.

Throughout the market are trays filled with various kinds of live or processed insects – plump young cicadas, roasted stink bugs, bee pupae, and silkworm pupae. Many people find insects “hard to swallow”, but the locals consider them delicacies. Each species has a distinctive flavor. Some varieties sell for as much as 16 USD per kilogram.

Lo Thi Bun, a vendor at Na Si Market, told us: “Cicadas appear in May, June, and July. These black cicadas are larger and meatier than the white variety. They are sold for 12 USD per kilogram. Young cicadas stir-fried with sour bamboo shoot sauce taste the best, especially with a little fat added for crispiness. At Na Si Market, the kind of insects to be found depends on the season. This is the largest and most famous insect market in the region.”

Lo Thi Tuoi, a long-time vendor at Na Si Market, says insects are sold to both local residents and tourists. Many travelers stop here because they’re curious to try some insects. Young cicadas and stink bugs are best sellers.

“On average, I sell 20–30 kilograms of stink bugs a day. If I have more, I can still sell out. Young stink bugs like these cost 2 to 2.5 USD per kilogram. Young cicadas cost 12 to 16 USD per kilogram. After cicada and stink bug season comes cricket season. I also sell snails. I go to the market every day and can earn 120 to 240 USD per month,” Tuoi said.

Na Si Market is an interesting stop for visitors looking to experience the culinary culture of the highlands. Many hesitate to eat insects, but those brave enough to try are surprised by the rich, crispy flavors.

Le Thi Xuyen from Tuan Giao commune, Dien Bien province, said: “Whenever we pass through here, we stop by the market. There are many things that my family enjoys, such as bee pupae, young cicadas, and grasshoppers. There are also many kinds of herbs and vegetables unique to the Thai people. The vendors are very friendly. I really love the special character of this market.”

Na Si Market, located on National Highway 6, welcomes large numbers of people every day of the year.
