(VOVworld) – Vietnam considers climate change adaptation and response a primary task. Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai said this at the 3rd national conference on natural disaster mitigation and climate change response in Hanoi on October 10.
He told the conference that climate change has stronger and faster impacts on Vietnam. Natural disasters have occurred with increasing intensify and frequency, causing severe losses of human life and property. Realizing the serious consequences of climate change for national sustainable growth, Vietnam has approved the UN convention on climate change and the Kyoto protocol.
Mr. Hai appreciated the international assistance for Vietnam to improve its capacity to deal with climate change, which has had practical benefits for the community. "Vietnam considers climate change adaptation and prevention a vital task for resilient development. It has applied mechanisms and policies on climate change adaptation and prevention, constructed climate change scenarios, enhanced climate change observation and communication, and consolidated local capacity in this field. Vietnam has also improved the awareness of people and administration agencies regarding this matter, because if the people are not ready to deal with disasters, the losses will be huge."
The delegates praised the implementation of the National target program on responding to climate change and the Hyogo framework of action in the 2011-2013 period.
