(VOVWORLD) -The earthquake that hit eastern Afghanistan on the night of August 31 has killed 2,217 people and injured nearly 4,000 others, the Taliban government said on Thursday. Most of the casualties were reported in the mountainous province of Kunar.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) on Thursday recorded a 4.7-magnitude tremor, located about 13 km northeast of Jalalabad city, the capital of Nangarhar province.
On August 31, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Afghanistan in the mountainous provinces of Kunar, Nangarhar and Laghman, near the border with Pakistan, causing houses where people were sleeping to collapse. This was one of the worst earthquakes to hit the impoverished country in decades.
