Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the proposal covers five areas. “One, aggravated hate speech offence for preachers and leaders who promote violence. Secondly, increase penalties for hate speech promoting violence. Thirdly, making hate an aggravating factor in sentencing crimes for online threats and harassment. Fourthly, developing a regime for listing organizations whose leaders engage in hate speech promoting violence or racial hatred. And fifthly, developing a narrow federal offence for serious vilification based on race and/or advocating racial supremacy.”

The Minister for Home Affairs will have new powers to cancel or reject visas for those who spread hate and division in Australia or would do so if they were allowed to enter the country.

Mr. Albanese also announced a 12-month task force led by education expert David Gonski, Chairman of the University of New South Wales, who has previously led landmark reforms of Australia’s education system.

In the coming days, the Australian government will reveal additional measures to strengthen Australia's gun laws. The New South Wales administration will begin tightening gun control next week.
