East Sea Security under discussion in Russia

(VOVworld)- Factors affecting the security of East Asia and the East Sea were high on the agenda of the international security conference held last week in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

The delegates focused their discussions on factors that affect security in East Asia and security in the East Sea


Experts and scholars from the Asia and Europe discussed issues including co-operation versus competition between neighboring, border demarcation, arms races, and nuclear proliferation. Participants criticized the irrational “cow’s tongue” or “U-shaped line” drawn by China, and called for greater cooperation in resolving disputes by peaceful means based on the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Participants voiced support for the Vietnam-China six-point agreement and called for more historical research for documents about the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagoes. Several participants presented evidence of Vietnam’s sovereignty over those two archipelagoes.
