(VOVworld) - The European Union is working to keep Greece firmly in the Eurozone.

An EU spokeswoman said Monday that the only option that the European Commission is working for is to keep Greece firmly in the currency bloc amid widespread speculation that market turmoil could force cash-strapped Athens to leave the zone. EU Economic Affairs Commissioner Pierre Moscovici landed in Athens on Monday to evaluate the current situation.

Greece is battling volatile hostile financial markets spooked by the possibility of early elections. Prime Minister Antonis Samaras’s government has announced an election to replace President Karolos Papoulias, whose term expires in March.
