Mr. Barrot said in a statement that Greenland has chosen to remain within the framework of Denmark, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union, rather than becoming part of the United States, as desired by US President Donald Trump.
The statement was made on the same day that Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Greenland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Vivian Motzfeldt, met with US Vice-President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The meeting took place in response to US President Donald Trump's threats to take over Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, for national security reasons.
In another development, several European countries, including France, Germany, Sweden, and Norway, announced that they would send troops to Greenland to take part in a joint military exercise with the Danish armed forces, demonstrating their support for Denmark on the Greenland issue.
