Hamas rejects disarmament
(VOVWORLD) - Senior Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya says Hamas has a “legitimate right” to possess weapons, and any proposals concerning the next phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement must guarantee that right.
The US-brokered ceasefire, which took effect on October 10, has helped to end more than two years of fighting between Israel and Hamas. However, the truce remains fragile, and Israel and Hamas have accused each other of violations almost daily.
The ceasefire agreement consists of three phases. In the first phase, Palestinian armed groups committed to releasing their remaining 48 hostages, alive or dead. Hamas has returned all their hostages, except for one body that has not yet been found.
In the second phase of the agreement, Israeli forces are to continue withdrawing from positions in the Gaza Strip to be replaced by an international stabilization force, and Hamas is required to disarm.
The third phase involves the reconstruction of large areas of Gaza that were devastated by Israel’s military campaign.
