IAEA head calls situation at Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant “very fragile”

(VOVWORLD) - Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi on Wednesday called the situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southeastern Ukraine, currently under Russian control, as “very fragile” due to military activities in the area.

The IAEA is trying to stabilize the situation and is examining several technical issues at the site, he said.

Inspecting the impact of a fire last month on one of the plant’s cooling towers, Grossi judged it unlikely that the primary source of the fire began at the base of the cooling tower, adding that investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing.

Grossi made the statement during his inspection of nuclear power plants in Russia-Ukraine conflict zones, which aims to assess the safety of these plants. Moscow and Kyiv regularly accuse each other of attacking the plant and risking a nuclear accident.
