(VOVworld) - The first direct flight between Iran and the U.S since Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution will happen in the very near future, the Tehran Times reported on Thursday. This is a positive sign that the long-frozen diplomatic ties between the two nations are thawing.

The newspaper quoted Abolfazl Hejazi, an official of Iran’s Chamber of Commerce, as saying that preliminary steps have been taken and Tehran is waiting for final permission from the Civil Aviation Organization to launch 13-hour charter flights to the U.S.

Diplomatic ties seem to have warmed since US President Barack Obama and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani shared a historic phone call in September.

Iran halted direct flights from Tehran to New York City following the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Bilateral ties were frozen after a kidnapping at the US Embassy in 1980.
