Lunar New Year get-together held for Vietnamese communities abroad

(VOVWORLD) -Overseas Vietnamese were treated to a "miniature Vietnam" in the heart of modern Fukuoka of Japan at the weekend during a Spring program featuring 30 food stalls, cultural displays, folk games, and traditional Tet (Vietnamese New Year) experiences.

The program was organized by the Consulate General of Vietnam in Fukuoka, the Association of Vietnamese People in Fukuoka and the Association of Vietnamese Businesses in Kyushu.

Children were seen lining up to receive lucky money, adults seeking auspicious calligraphy for the new year, Vietnamese students and their long-time Vietnamese families gathering around a table of banh chung (sticky rice cakes), and Japanese people enjoying traditional dishes and experiencing Vietnamese Tet.

Consul General of Vietnam in Fukuoka Vu Chi Mai said, “This year's Spring Homeland 2026 program holds special significance, as it is held after the successful conclusion of the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam. The momentous milestone opens a new era of development – an era of strong growth for the Vietnamese nation, with major orientations and aspirations for the country's future.”

On Sunday evening, 300 Vietnamese expatriates living in New South Wales, Queensland, and South Australia gathered in Sydney to celebrate the Lunar New Year 2026. Vietnamese expatriates and guests were immersed in Vietnamese music, especially Hue Royal Court Music performances by artists from the Hue Royal Court Traditional Arts Theater.

“I came here to taste traditional dishes, meet friends, see the beautiful ao dai dresses worn by the locals, and watch the Hue royal court dance performance. My origin is in Hue, so watching the Hue royal court dance performance moved me deeply because it felt like returning to my hometown after so many years. Thank you to the Consul General and the artists for bringing such a wonderful program,” according to Assoc. Prof., Dr. Nguyen Mai Hoa, from the University of New South Wales.

Also on Sunday evening, the Consulate General of Vietnam in Battambang province organized a Tet event for the Vietnamese community in Northwest Cambodia to meet, share, and contemplate traditional values. On behalf of the Vietnamese community in Northwest Cambodia.

Tran Van Bao, Chairman of the Khmer-Vietnamese Association in Cambodia, Battambang branch, told VOV, “We are excited and confident that in the future there will be more support for the Vietnamese community in Cambodia to easily integrate into the host country. Together we will contribute to building a better Vietnamese community.”

For every Vietnamese person, no matter where they live, Tet remains a strong spiritual bond connecting them to their homeland.
