(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam defeated South Korea 7-6 in a penalty shootout to secure third place at the 2026 AFC U23 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia on Friday night.

Vietnam took the lead twice by goals from Quoc Viet and Dinh Bac. However, after Dinh Bac was sent off late in the second half, Vietnam were reduced to 10 men and conceded an equaliser in the closing moments. With no goals scored in extra time, the match was decided on penalties.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Saturday sent a congratulatory letter to the Vietnamese team.
The tournament final will be played on Saturday evening between Japan and China.
