Mekong countries, South Korea boost cooperation

(VOVWORLD) - The 7th Mekong-Republic of Korea Foreign Ministers’ Meeting took place in Busan, Korea, to review the action plan for 2014-2017 and cooperation orientations for 2017-2020.

The ministers agreed to enhance cooperation in building modern, smart, and ecological infrastructure, and boosting Mekong regional connectivity though traffic programs, exclusive economic zones, and cross-border economic corridors. They reached a consensus on sustainably using and managing water and other resources and implementing training programs to improve labor.

Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Ha Kim Ngoc said Vietnam highly values the Mekong-Republic of Korea cooperation and proposed initiatives to boost socio-economic development. He reaffirmed Vietnam’s consistent policy on East Sea issues, the Korean peninsula, and non-traditional security challenges. 

The ministers issued a co-chair statement, an action plan for 2017-2020, and agreed to hold the 8th Mekong-Republic of Korea Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on the sidelines of the 51st ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Singapore in 2018. They underlined the importance of maintaining peace, stability, and freedom of aviation and navigation in the East Sea in line with international law.
