North Korean leader Kim Jong Un expressed satisfaction at the tests and congratulated the scientists who developed the weapon.

Two “unidentified projectiles” were fired toward the East Sea on Thursday, according to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff. The projectiles flew 370 kilometers at a maximum altitude of 90 km. The DPRK has test-fired short-range projectiles 12 times this year. Japan's coast guard said the two projectiles appeared to be missiles and landed outside Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone. At a National Security Council meeting on Thursday, South Korean officials expressed “strong concern” about North Korea’s intentions.

US Defense Department spokesperson Dave Eastburn said the Pentagon is aware of the launch and is looking into it. He said the US is working closely with South Korea and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
