(VOVWORLD) - The darkly comic thriller “One Battle After Another”, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, won Best Picture at the Academy Awards, capping a haul of six trophies on Sunday night at the Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles.
Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, the film is highly acclaimed by critics for its reflection of contemporary American political and social chaos, utilizing a "deeply psychological" storytelling style that blends intense action with raw emotional depth.
Before this year Anderson had received 11 career Oscar nominations and no wins. In addition to Best Picture, he won Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.
“One Battle After Another” was also honored in categories including: “Best Supporting Actor” for Sean Penn, “Best Adapted Screenplay”, “Achievement in Casting”, and “Best Film Editing”. With 13 nominations, the film was considered one of the most prominent works of this year's Oscar season.
But the biggest surprise at this year's Oscars was Michael B. Jordan’s victory in the “Best Actor” category for his role in the film “Sinners”. The actor surpassed several heavyweights, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Timothée Chalamet.
Speaking upon receiving the first Oscar of his career, Michael B. Jordan said, "I’m here because of the people that came before me, Sidney, Denzel, Halle Berry, and Forest, and all those actors who graced the stage and not looking for awards and not looking for acknowledgment. They are artists. They want to do the work, and that's something I’ve always focused on was trying to do the work. My father always told me don't expect anything to be handed to you, do the work, and everything else is going to figure itself out."
"Sinners" had entered the ceremony with 16 nominations, more than any other film in the nearly 100-year-old history of the Oscars. The movie finished with four awards including the “Best Original Screenplay”, the “Best Original Score”, and the “Best Cinematography” for Autumn Durald Arkapaw, the first woman and first Black cinematographer honored in this category.
Another highlight of this year's Oscar ceremony was the victory of the song “Golden” from the animated feature “KPop Demon Hunters” in the “Best Original Song” category. The Norwegian entry, “Sentimental Value” directed by Joachim Trier, won for best international feature film.
