(VOVWORLD) - The ambitious Great Green Wall for the Sahel and Sahara Initiative (GGW) has received at least 14.3 billion USD in new funding, said French President Emmanuel Macron Monday at the One Planet Summit for Biodiversity in Paris.
World leaders meet for an online One Planet Summit on January 11, 2020, to discuss climate change and the preservation of biodiversity and ecosystem. |
The funding will re-green an 8,000 km long world wonder running from the Atlantic coast to the Red Sea and fast track efforts to restore degrading land, save biological diversity, and create green jobs and build up the resilience of the Sahel people.
World leaders on Monday reiterated the urgent need for concerted global action to safeguard biodiversity and set up a global governance framework on climate issues.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said biodiversity will face a financial gap of 711 billion USD per year until 2030, and said desertification at the edges of the Sahara desert is pushing millions of people into poverty and forced migration.
