Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung
(VOVworld) – A Vietnamese delegation led by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung left Hanoi on Sunday to attend the ASEAN-US Summit scheduled for Monday and Tuesday at Sunnylands in Rancho Mirage, California, in the United States at the invitation of US President Barack Obama. This unprecedented gathering, the first hosted by the US with the ASEAN leaders, builds on the deeper partnership that the US has forged with ASEAN since 2009 and is expected to further advance the US’s rebalance to Asia and the Pacific.
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and other ASEAN leaders will attend a number of meetings on promoting the ASEAN Economic Community on the principles of creativity and business, protecting peace, prosperity, security, especially maritime security in Asia Pacific, and fighting terrorism and other trans-national security challenges facing the region.
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung’s participation at the event reflects the Vietnamese Party and State’s external policies of promoting Vietnam’s role as a responsible member within ASEAN, especially as Vietnam has successfully concluded its 12th National Party Congress. This also indicates Vietnam’s wishes to boost the ASEAN-US strategic partnership and promote the Vietnam-US bilateral ties, especially on security-defense, science-technology, economics-trade, and investment cooperation, to better implement bilateral free trade agreements, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
