(VOVWORLD) - The Slovenian government on Thursday approved a decision to recognize an independent Palestinian state, Prime Minister Robert Golob said, following in the steps of Spain, Ireland and Norway.

Prime Minister Golob also called for an immediate end to the Hamas-Israel conflict in the Gaza Strip and the release of all hostages.

Spain, Norway and Ireland formally recognized a Palestinian state on Tuesday in a coordinated effort to put international pressure on Israel to soften its response to last year’s Hamas-led attack. Israel condemned the move and immediately recalled the ambassadors in the three countries for “urgent consultations”.

Meanwhile, Britain and Australia said they were considering the same action, while France said it was not the right time to recognize the Palestinian state. Germany and the US believe that a two-state solution can only be achieved through dialogue.
