The same day, Hwang said at a National Security Council meeting that there must not be any loophole in national security and stressed the need to retaliate if North Korea engages in any provocations based on its "misjudgement".
Opposition parties welcomed the passage of the impeachment motion and called on the Constitutional Court to promptly carry out its adjudication process. The Democratic Party and the People's Party stressed the need to stabilize state affairs, proposing forming a parliament-government panel to fill any government vacuum. The move is seen by observers as courting voters amid the prospects of an early presidential election next year.
