Syria vows to step up chemical weapons destruction
(VOVworld)- Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Muqdad says the Syrian government is committed to removing all 1,200 tons of its chemical weapons by mid-2014. According to Faisal, difficulties, particularly the war on terror, have hindered Syria’s implementation of some commitments including destroying its chemical weapons. Syria is working closely with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to honor its commitments to the world community.

Syria missed a deadline on Wednesday for shipping 700 tons of the most dangerous chemicals and 500 tons of less deadly chemicals out of its territory. At the end of January, just 4% of the total had been transported to the port of Latakia for disposal.
